Bill Blinn  > Zoos > Behind the Scenes at the Columbus Zoo
Through the efforts of friends, we were able to arrange (Would "finagle" be a better word?) a behind-the-scenes tour of the Columbus Zoo. We expected about an hour in the primates area because the Columbus Zoo is well known for its work with primates. What we didn't know is that we would also get an up-close look at the pachyderm building (and the baby elephant) and the promotions building where we met some of the animals that have gone with zoo director emeritus Jack Hanna on television tours. Photography was somewhat restricted in the primates area to avoid upsetting the gorillas, but less restricted in the pachyderm building and in the promotions building.

Bill Blinn > I already knew that flamingos turn pink because of the food they eat, but I didn't know that a flamingo feather will revert to gray over time if it's removed from the flamingo. For this reason, there is no market in flamingo feathers. At birth, flamingos' beaks are straight, but they then become curved.

Bill Blinn > Cheetahs are the largest purring cats.
Bill Blinn > A cheetah's foot is more like the foot of a dog. The claws do not retract.
Bill Blinn > This small fox with the enormous ears loves to play with a squeaky toy and he fetches it almost like a dog would. The zoo ordered an entire case of rubber-duck squeaky toys for this little guy.
Bill Blinn > We were close enough to this cheetah to hear the purr. Two cheetahs and two dogs live together as part of a program the Columbus Zoo participates in to safeguard these cats in the wild. Cheetahs seem large but, in the wild, they're relatively small. They raid farms for food and farmers are allowed to kill them in many areas. The Columbus Zoo's cooperative program's goal is to place large dogs on farms to frighten the cheetahs away from farms.

Two big cats and two big dogs live together in this 2-apartment accommodation.
